Ocean on Listen
Lend an ear! You'll be surprised by the diversity of underwater sounds.
"Ocean on Listen", the new immersive space of Cité de la Mer From Cherbourg, dedicated to the adventure of Man and the Sea and the emotions of the depths, plunges us into the sonic universe of the oceans.
After the success of the exhibition "The Sea at Heart", the site entrusted us with the creation of all the sets and signage for the submarine area, at the heart of the permanent exhibition.
The underwater route of La Cité de la Mer
Covering 411 m2, the underwater centre largely dates from 2022. In order to renew its offering upon reopening to the public at the end of March 2024, this fun science park has devised a new project for families around a cross-cutting theme: sounds under the sea.
Following a call for tenders, we have won the complete redesign of this unprecedented trail, the result of partnerships with the National Navy, the Directorate General of Armaments, the Acoustic Interpretation and Recognition Centre, Naval Group and AGASM Section Ondine (a Cherbourg association of submariners). The exhibition curation and project management were carried out by the teams at La Cité de la Mer. Art direction and the trail's scenography were entrusted to Mélinée Faubert and the graphics were designed by the agency MaxiSouk.
Expectations
Ocean on Listen proposes numerous sensory and playful devices to hear the underwater soundscape. The route is built around 5 thematic zones:
1 - Silence in the board
At the heart of this area, which evokes a submarine's hull, you will discover the essential concepts for understanding the underwater world: Archimedes' principle, a submarine's trim, acoustic discretion... To immerse visitors in this fascinating universe, we have created arches from backlit diffused PET, and the explanation panels from Dibond.
2 - The Bidhous Club
A play area for the little ones, immersing them in the graphic world of a submarine, thanks to the scenery we printed on wallpaper. Do you know who the "bidou" is on board a submarine? It's the youngest member of the crew!
3 - Listening to the Ocean
Lend an ear! Settled into the sound niches of this underwater listening station, you will be surprised by the diversity of underwater sounds through astonishing sound quizzes... Little ones will even be able to listen to animals that seem like musicians!
4 - In the Secret of the Golden Ears
Sit down in front of your workstation, like a real underwater acoustician. We've created the displays on printed adhesive sheets in our workshop. You'll be able to test your hearing, as if you were taking your place in the Command, Navigation and Operations Centre of a submarine!
5 - The PCNO
A new simulator lets you take control of the cockpit to lead a stealth mission aboard the Furtif, a nuclear submarine, which has set off from the Cherbourg base.
To guide visitors throughout the journey, we created the signage using cut adhesive letters. To give the titles more depth, we covered the lettering with a layer of PVC.
